Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Dallas psychotherapist Dr. Tedi Koehn works closely with a number of women, both adolescents and adults, to help them overcome a wide array of emotional issues. These issues cover a wide spectrum of mental and emotional pain, including grief, panic, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder, also known as OCD, is a type of mental disorder characterized by repeated, undesired thoughts or actions. A person with OCD will often be consumed by obsessive thoughts and worries, and will perform a certain act repetitively to rid themselves of the feelings of obsession. These repeated acts are known as “compulsions.”
Compulsions are a way to provide temporary relief from obsessions. A person with OCD might repeatedly wash their hands to avoid contamination, or repeatedly check if a door is locked. While even healthy individuals have certain rituals such as washing hands or double-checking that a door is locked, someone with OCD will perform compulsions repeatedly, to the point that the ritual interferes with their daily life and causes stress and frustration.
